Objective:
To solve and graph inequalities in one variable.Vocabulary:
- Inequality - similar to an equation but instead of an = it has <, >, ≤, or ≥.
- Open circle - a circle that is not filled in.
- Closed circle - a circle that is filled in.
Notes:
Solving inequalities:- Just like solving equations except
- When you multiply or divide by a negative number you must switch the inequality symbol (greater than switches to less than and vice versa).
- Just like graphing equations except
- Use an open circle for < and > (not equal).
- Use a closed circle to for ≤ and ≥.
Examples:
Solve:
Solve and graph each inequality.- x + 8 < 15

- 5x − 3 > 7

- 13 − 7x ≤ −8

- 3x > 11x + 4
