Objective:
To graph linear equations using intercepts.Vocabulary:
- x-intercept (x,0) - The point where a line crosses the x-axis.
- y-intercept (0,y) - The point where a line crosses the y-axis.
- Straight Edge - Something with a firm, straight edge, such as a ruler, protractor, identification card, etc.
Notes:
Use this graphing method for linear equations that are written in standard form (Ax + By = C).Steps to graph using intercepts:
- Find the x-intercept:
- Set y = 0 (substitute 0 for y), and solve for x.
- Find the y-intercept:
- Set x = 0 (substitute 0 for x), and solve for y.
- Plot the two intercepts.
- Use a straight edge to draw a line through the points
- Add arrows to the ends and label the line
